John J. Castellani to Lead PhRMA as New President and CEO

Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) announced that John J. Castellani will assume the role of President and Chief Executive Officer, effective September 1, 2010. Mr. Castellani joins PhRMA after more than nine years as President and CEO of Business Roundtable, a leading association of corporate chief executive officers. He will succeed former PhRMA President and CEO Billy Tauzin, who transitioned to a role as senior advisor earlier this year. Read more

Study: Doctors Could do Better to Help Smokers Quit

A U.C. Davis study shows doctors could do a better job when it comes to helping patients quit smoking. Researchers surveyed seven groups of health care professionals across the country. Almost all of them did a good job asking patients if they smoke and telling them about the risks of smoking. However, far fewer followed up with programs, plan or prescriptions to encourage smokers to break the habit.

In curbing the spread of tobacco use in Santa Clara County, the county's public health department is putting the grades out on local governments and their tobacco-prevention efforts.

San Luis Obispo Smoking Ban Now in Effect

Smoking in nearly all public places in San Luis Obispo is now banned by law. A grace period that allowed businesses and other entities to adjust to the law ended June 20. Under the new law, smoking is prohibited in indoor and outdoor areas frequented by the public.

Perata and Friends Move to Put Tobacco Tax on 2012 Ballot

Mayoral candidate and former state Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata and other backers of a $1-per-pack tobacco tax to fund cancer research said they submitted more than enough petition signatures Wednesday to put their measure on the ballot in 2012.
